| The Borgo of Villa Fogliano
|
|
The area of Borgo di Fogliano, on the shores of the homonymous lake, is situated in the northern section of the Circeo Park. This is the northernmost border of the Circeo’ park. From here traveling southward, you will notice two extraordinary and different natural habitats which characterize the protected area: the coastal dunes and the background coastal lake of Fogliano, of almost 400 hectares, which, together with the other 3 lakes, Monaci, Caprolace and Paola or Sabaudia, represents the crucial point of reference for the seasonal migrations of typical wetland species.

The Villa Fogliano and Borgo di Fogliano complex are a little more than few homes together, but its historical and architectural features are beautiful and remarkable. The ancient Romans were the first to carry out significant land reclamation works, transforming the lake into an important breeding and fishing center, building swimming-pools and canals to better exploit the richness of the lake. After a long period of decay due to the dark ages, in 1294, Boniface VIII (Benedetto Caetani) gave the possession of the hamlet, including Fogliano, to his family, but it was not until the XVIII century that the complex was called Villa di Fogliano.

The Caetani family built, in fact, the hunting shed to receive Europe’s famous guests. Tthis was also part of the pope’s political strategy as Boniface was in “bad terms” with the king of France, Philip IV, the Fine, he was trying to get to his side the powerful English Catholic allies: the Earl of Albany Stewart and the Cardinal of York (Henry Stewart), relatives of James II Stewart.

Later on they built the old country house called “Villa Inglese” (means the English Villa in Italian), dating back to 1877. Today the villa together with the hunting shed and also the rests of the ancient church of St. Andrea represent an important historical-architectonical complex.
