| Domitian's Villa private harbour
|
|
A small private harbour on a semi-hidden edge of Paola’s Lake allowed the Emperor who arrived from the sea, to get into the villa. A system of slides in bricks made sure that the Emperor would access the villa without getting wet. Domitian’s Villa ruins and findings give us the opportunity to have a rather good knowledge of the Roman settlements gravitating around the Circeo promontory.

On the banks of the Paola Lake, in Sabaudia, inside a natural reserve (rests of Circe), plunged into a small piece of Mediterranean vegetation, there is one of the most interesting archaeological sites of southern Latium.

Inside, this ancient Roman villa, similarly to those in the area of Formia and Gaeta enjoyed an in-house Mediterranean garden with a Roman fountain, the nymphaeum, decorated with statues and little, spilling cascades. The villa’s rooms were adorned with frescoes with warm colors.

The ancient multi-color marble floors showed patterns in a style called "opus spicatum", of which it is still possible to admire sections of the originals inside the four ancient arcades.
