Domitian's Villa in the Circeo

The Villa of Domitian is located inside a protected forest area of the Circeo Park and opened to guided visits upon authorisation of the park’s management. The archaeological sites characterizing the area are probably more than 100. Domitian’s Villa complex extends over approximately 45 hectares; it was researched during all the various excavation campaigns.

Many sculptures have been recovered from the villa, among which some of the most famous ones are the Apollo, called of Kassel, a replication of the famous original one and the Satyr with a flute now conserved in the Vatican Museums. Among the ruins were identified the fundaments of many structures, such as the hot-baths, a palestra, an open swimming pool and a small theatre. Domitiano’s Villa had an ingenious water system, which synchronized the influx and the reflux of the thermal waters at different levels.

Domitian’s Villa is surrounded by the woodland of the Circeo National Park, on Paola’s Lake just under Mt Circeo
