The Circeo forest symbol: the wild boar

The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is the symbol of the park and occupies a very important place, together with the fallow deer (Dama dama ) introduced in the past together with the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus); the deers are is located in a special fauna area, between the roads “Migliora 53” and “Migliara 54”, not far from Sabaudia. The wild boar is present with a very large population even outside the parks’ boundaries. This wild pig, is common in the area of the Aurunci and Ausoni Mountains southern Latium as well in other regions of Italy and Europe; it has a long body with short legs and a large head on a short bulky neck. Their coat is made of short, bristly hairs and is dark or brindled, although the young are tan with distinctive and beautiful pale stripes.

Plenty of speed and stamina, the wild boar is the ancestor to our domestic pigs, a large strong pig species covered in dark bristly hairs. Older males can reach a large size and if cornered when hunted can react starting epic battles against many dogs. It is a widespread species in this and other areas of southern Latium. Males mate only when they reach a certain size, eperience and dominance, often around 4 years old. Adult males are solitary, but females form groups with their lovely young, called sounders. They communicate constantly using sounds, smell and visual signals such as the position of the ears and tail. The wild boars in the park are active during the day and evening, but mainly during the night. The park in autumn is a good place were mating takes place and the forest echoes with fights between the males trying to establish their dominance around their chosen territory.
