Visiting the Circeo Park

From the Visitors' Centre, the educational path starts and it allows a first approach with the nature of the Circeo and with the ancient human settlements. When you go through it, you can meet the evocative reconstructions of the Lestre, the ancient villages of straw and wood, which witness the relation between man and the woods, in the period preceding the reclamation. The park can be visited on foot or by bicycle. There are paths and bike routes both by the sea and towards the promontory and in this area ,

you will have remarkable possibilities of a fantastic day out in the nature if you are a fan of mountain bike, for distances of various length. Information, aimed at ensuring the environmental preservation, is effected both directly and indirectly through the structures of the park and through the collaboration with other associations organizing activities and operating on the territory. Environmental and educational programs are generally brought about in collaboration with schools and SCOUTS. Exhibition and meetings are a further means of information for visitors.

The information activity is developed inside the three main tourist offices: the visitors’ centre, in Sabaudia; the Door of the Park, in San Felice Circeo; the village of Villa Fogliano, in Latina, the main county town. The reserve promotes didactic visits, environmental education programs, meetings and updating. In 1986 was inaugurated a path for motor handicapped and for the blind. The special path explores the

park for two kilometers inside the Botanical Garden without any inclinations. There are signs written in Braille with guiding ropes, and small wooden stations are scattered along the path; here blind visitors can enjoy the scent of the Mediterranean vegetation, the exotic plant essences, the air full of amusing flowers scents with the chance to “touch by hand” and to feel also the difference between the smooth bark of an eucalyptus and the hard one of an oak or of a palm or of the various types of pinecones and seeds. The sense of smell and of hearing are pleased. On the shore of the small nearby lagoon and in the heart of the botanical Garden the wind brings the relaxing sound of the breeze on the water and the calls of the wild birds nesting or flying over the lake and in the gardens. Many other paths cross through the park and give visitors an idea about all its natural beauty. They are characterized by the presence of various educational post-guides explaining about the human presence in this area of the South Pontino. The system of paths and cycle tracks offers to nature lovers the possibility of having a deeper contact with the territory and its vegetation and wildlife.
